I like working with clients to make pieces that combine their needs and aesthetic with the knowledge I have gained from designing lettering and carving (in stone and wood) for over twenty five years. I have made many memorials and worked on Public Arts commissions in the UK and abroad. Recent projects include: the Animals in War monument, Park Lane, London; The Museum of Modern Art in Edinburgh and St George’s, Brandon Hill, Bristol. I have permanent installations at the Tate and Serpentine galleries. In 1982 I founded the Lettering course at Weymouth College and taught there for sixteen years. I first worked for Memorials by Artists in 1989 and have been teaching for the Memorial Arts Charity since 1999. I enjoyed a long and productive collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay from 1991 until his death in 2006. My practise is rooted in the craft tradition of design for materials and an extensive knowledge of historical letterforms, which I happily plunder to design contemporary letterforms. It is important to me that each piece is sympathetic to the material and tools used.
