I have been a practicing sculptor since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone, College of Art, Dundee, in 1971. A traditional training gave me a wide range of skills and a love of crafting by hand. These I value greatly. I 'wear two hats' in my practice and consequently in the work I create: First, I am a sculptor, working mainly alone and subjectively. ldeas from figuration to adventures in abstraction orientated towards landscape. Second, I am a designer and hand lettercutter in stone. I work closely with clients, am sensitive to the issues they bring and enjoy being the 'creative bridge' for their ideas. Inspired by poetry and the written word, I have used words in my work for many years. Showing the source of my work helps in its interpretation and encourages audience participation. This is an essential aspect of many residencies I have undertaken. I choose clay, wood stone, plaster, flotsam and jetsam. The techniques I use provide creative contrasts, too: modelling, carving, casting and assembling. As a counter to working in isolation, occasionally collaborate with other artists, poets and writers. Combining words with sculpture marked the beginning of the large part lettercutting has played in my career. Research, detailed study and experimentation make lettercutting a process which is continually stretching and revitalising.
