After eight years as design student, apprentice and assistant Gary established his lettering workshop in 1993. He quickly gained a reputation for the innovative content of his work which has won him numerous public art commissions over the years. His work also caught the attention of the broader art world culminating in his first major solo exhibition at the New Art Centre Sculpture Park and Gallery in 2004.

He has worked with Memorials by Artists for many years and completed two major commissions through them including the Bali Bombing Memorial at Horse Guards Road, London, (project managed and assisted by Martin Cook), and Christ Church Cloister fountain in Oxford. Both projects involved the extensive design and re-landscaping of two important architecturally sensitive sites.

In 2002 Stuart Buckle joined the workshop on a two year Memorial Arts Charity apprenticeship funded by the Jerwood Foundation, and his natural skill has been an invaluable element of the workshop ever since.

Gary continues to exhibit widely and was awarded the first Jerwood Contemporary Makers prize in 2008. That same year he won the prestigious Leverhulme Trust award for a twelve month artist residency at the University of Southampton department of Archaeology. His work is in many major collections.

Other work can be seen at: the Glasgow High Court, Little Sparta, Greenwich Millennium Gardens, the Imperial War Museum London, the New Scottish Parliament, the University of Southampton, Westminster Abbey, Glasgow Caledonian University, Eton rowing lake, Chatsworth Gardens and The Victoria and Albert Museum.
