Well judged and well crafted work creates “grace-notes” in an increasingly machine made and often ugly environment.
The hand and mind of the creator is critical in working against the tide of computer-generated, sand-blasted work produced on an industrial, repetitive scale. The difference is that between music and muzak; a photograph and a painting.
Following apprenticeship and the Royal College of Art I worked as an assistant to the lettering designer and wood engraver Reynolds Stone. Then freelancing and teaching design for many years. My work included collaboration with the concrete poet and gardener Ian Hamilton Finlay. Some of the work shown here was carried out with both of these inspirational artists.
I believe the greatest satisfaction to be found in this work is the fulfilment of client need. Whether it is celebratory or commemorative work, work for the garden and home, public sculpture, architectural work or the interpretation of heraldry it is essential to develop a clear brief with the commissioner. And then to create a work that more than satisfies the client’s expectation and uplifts the spirit of all who look on the work.
