Born Vermont, USA, l938. BA, Dartmouth College, l956; PhD (French Literature), Stanford University, l968. Resident in London since 1969; married since l97l (one daughter). In the seventies studied brush lettering at City and Guilds of London Art School and calligraphy with Ann Camp at Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute; received the diploma in Advanced Calligraphy (with merit) from the Calligraphy and Bookbinding course devised by Ann Camp at Digby Stuart College, Roehampton, in l986. From l985 to l999, tutor in calligraphy and lettering at Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute; has conducted workshops over many years in England, Belgium and the US. Author, with Gerald Fleuss, of ‘ Practical Calligraphy’ (Hamlyn, l99l). Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (chairman l99l-l993), the Art Workers’ Guild and the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society; member of Letter Exchange. Since l985, mainly involved in inscriptional letter carving, having worked with Pieter Boudens in Belgium, Tom Perkins in England and John Benson in the US. Has carried out many projects for Harriet Frazer’s Memorials by Artists, and in collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay. Past clients include Westminster Abbey, Harvard University, Yale University, Glaziers’ and Fishmongers’ Halls, Sir John Soane’s Museum, Rhodes House (Oxford), and many others.
