Memorials by Artists Services

Finding a sympathetic artist to interpret your ideas is the first and perhaps the most important step in commissioning a memorial. It is of course essential that you like the artist’s work, but ideally the they will also be someone with whom you can build a rapport, who will work sensitively with your ideas, understand your constraints and provide sound advice and guidance where necessary.

Examples of work by many of our artists can be seen on this website, but many people find it difficult to make a choice, being uncertain about what they want and who would be the best person to interpret their ideas - this is where Memorials by Artists can help.

Our personal knowledge of the artists and their work has taken over twenty years to establish and the result is the relationship we share with each of them today. It is this experience that we draw upon when selecting the most appropriate artist for each commission.

There are two ways that Memorials by Artists can help with commissioning:

The Introductory Service

  • We will advise and help you develop your ideas, either on the telephone or in person here at the Memorials by Artists office.
  • Once we have a good idea of what you envisage we will introduce you to a suitable artist in terms of the style of work you have in mind, geographical location, budget and timing and importantly that we feel you will collaborate well.
  • When you contact the selected artist we will have spoken and then written to him/her about your commission.
  • The artist will be expecting you to get in touch to arrange the first meeting, having received a detailed written brief from us, including the relevant rules and regulations for the churchyard or cemetery where appropriate.
  • Once you are completely satisfied with the design we will apply to the church or cemetery authority for permission (if appropriate).
  • When your commission is satisfactorily underway we will leave you and the artist to work directly together.

The Fully Guided Service

  • This Memorials by Artists service offers all of the above, with a higher level of support.
  • You will be guided through the project by one of our team who has many years experience and who has themselves suffered bereavement.
  • She will introduce you to the most suitable artist for your individual needs and will continue to oversee the project until completion, keeping you informed at every stage.
  • Your advisor will be able to offer advice on wording and/or timing if required and if necessary she will negotiate with the artist on issues of design, budget and timing on your behalf.
  • We have many years of experience and an in depth knowledge of Churchyard and Cemetery rules and regulations.
  • We are skilled at negotiating our way through any difficulties that may arise and in obtaining faculties for designs that may fall outside the diocesan rules for churchyard memorials.
  • We will make the process as easy as possible for you, freeing you and the artist to fully focus on the creation of the memorial itself.

If you are unable to visit the artist in person, everything can be arranged by telephone, email and post.
