Memorials by Artists is a unique organisation that brings together fine lettering artists with those wishing to commission beautiful lettered works for churchyard, cemetery, public space and the garden.
- Individual memorials in churchyards cemeteries and private spaces
- Garden memorials
- Large public memorials
- Architectural lettering
Over the last 20 years we have established an excellent working relationship with over seventy designer/lettercarvers and have helped people with the commissioning of over 3,000 fine memorials across the British Isles and beyond.
Memorials by Artists has become expert at matching a client with an artist and at overseeing the various stages of the commission, including the problems that sometimes arise with churchyard and cemetery regulations.
Memorials by Artists began from a personal search for a memorial to a young woman who died by suicide.
Our priority has always been the needs of the bereaved, and the belief that a memorial and the process of commissioning it can result in something of lasting meaning - as well as adding something beautifully made to the environment.
In 1991 Memorials by Artists was awarded a National Arts Collection Fund Award for An Outstanding Contribution to the Visual Arts.
From 15th October 2010 Memorials by Artists ceased to operate, but the Memorial Arts Charity will continue to offer help and advice to those wishing to commission a memorial or any other lettered work, including lettering for architecture.
The Memorial Arts Charity is also dedicated to ensuring that the UK’s long tradition of lettercarving and memorial art continues to flourish, through running lettering workshops and an Apprenticeship Scheme and through the founding of The Art & Memory Collection, the first national collection of memorial art.
